Chapter Fifteen

Luna was alone in the kitchen, taking more cookies out of the oven when Damon returned. “That was fast,” she said as he came in the back door.

“Is Albert here?”

“Huh?”

“Albert. Is he here?”

“No. I thought he was with you.” She looked out the kitchen window at the barnyard, then at the rifle in his hands. “Do you even know how to use that?”

“Yes,” he said defensively, then came over and whispered in her ear. “He’s an angel.”

She rolled her eyes. “Tell me you didn’t shoot him.”

“I did not shoot him.” He flushed red. “I did shoot into the air to get his attention.” He ran his hand through his hair, looking worried.

“What is it?”

He began to laugh nervously.

“Oh, no. No, you can’t crack up on me, Damon Surrey. We’re in this together.”

“Albert disappeared. Vanished. Poof. So did Bernard.”

She groaned. Was he joking? Was he losing his mind? She didn’t like the panic growing in his eyes. Without thinking, she grabbed hold of him and held on for dear life.

His free arm wrapped around her and hung on just as tightly. She didn’t know how long they stood like that, and part of her was glad she’d taken the cookies out of the oven before they burned.

“What’s going on in here?” Ma said as she stepped into the room.

They broke apart, Luna feeling oddly embarrassed. It was just a hug. But for them, it was a way to give some semblance of comfort, and to let each other know that they both had their sanity.

“Well?” Ma prompted. “What do you two have to say for yourselves?”

Luna glanced at Damon. “Um…” She put her arm around him. “We’re a thing.”

Ma’s face screwed up in confusion. “What?”

Damon caught her meaning and put his arm around her. “Yes, we’re… seeing each other.”

“So… you’re courting?”

They exchanged a look of now what do we do?, then nodded.

“Well, why didn’t you just say so?” Ma grinned. “I suppose this just happened?”

“Yes, we’ve, um, taken a shine to each other through this… ordeal.” Luna swallowed hard and let her hand drop. She was red as a beet, and hoped Ma didn’t see through the lie.

“I thought that might be.” Ma beamed. “Well, Damon, why don’t you sit and I’ll get you some coffee? Luna, did you finish with the cookies?”

“Almost.” She left Damon’s side, shooing him toward the table, and put the last sheet of cookies into the oven. It seemed to her that the longer they were here, the deeper in trouble they got. Now they’d have to pretend to be falling in love? She put the batch of cookies she’d just taken from the oven onto a plate, set it on the table, then at Ma’s urging sat down next to Damon and took the cup of coffee she offered. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Ma said. “So, how long have you two known each other?”

Luna felt the first twinge of panic crawl up her spine. What if they screwed this up and gave her different answers? “Well…”

Damon put his hand over hers.
